Jh. aus lat. in-formare entlehnt, und zwar in dessen übertragener Bedeutung »durch Unterweisung bilden, unterrichten«, eigentlich »eine Gestalt geben, formen, bilden« (zu 1↑ in..., ↑ In... und lat. forma »Gebilde, Gepräge, Gestalt« ‹vgl. ↑ Form›). Dazu stellen sich das Substantiv Information »Nachricht, Auskunft, Belehrung« (16. Jh.; aus lat. informatio), das Adjektiv informativ »belehrend, aufschlussreich« (19. Jh.) und die jungen Bildungen Informand »jemand, der ‹geheime› Informationen erhält«, Informant »jemand, der ‹geheime› Informationen liefert«, ferner Informatik »Wissenschaft von der Informationsverarbeitung, bes. von den elektronischen Datenverarbeitungsanlagen«, dazu Informatiker und das aus dem Engl. übernommene Infotainment »unterhaltende Darbietung von Informationen« als Kurzwort aus »information« und »entertainment« (alle 20. Jh.).
